Euston
Small rural service centre on the banks of the Murray
River
Located 939 km west of Sydney via the Great, Mid Western and
Sturt Highways Euston is a small service centre on the banks
of the Murray River. Typical of the prevailing agriculture
of the Riverina, it is completely surrounded by vineyards.
The township grew on the site of the Boomiarcool station,
established by seventeen-year-old Edmund Morey in 1846 at
what was then the western limit of European settlement. This
station grew to one million acres by 1946, by which time it
was known as Euston, after a mansion in Suffolk, England.
From the 1850s the land was devoted to wool production
and the town developed as a river port with a wharf, ferry,
courthouse, police station, hotel, a boiling-down works,
wool-scouring plant and Eucalyptus factory.
Euston was proclaimed a town in 1885 but virtually ceased
to exist when the river trade declined. The building of a
railway and road traffic bridge across the Murray joining
Robinvale in Victoria to Euston saved it from complete
extinction.
The only attractive building in town is the old
Courthouse and even that is debateable. It is perhaps
indicative of the town's priorities and functions that the
largest building is the Euston Bowling and Recreation Club,
located on the site of the old Shailer Hotel.
One advantage of Euston is its location adjacent the
Murray River. There is a boat ramp in front of the club and
several sandbars in the vicinity can be reached by access
roads. These are good spots for fishing and camping.
Things to see:
Lake Benanee
13 km east along the Sturt Highway is Lake Benanee. It has
barbecues and toilets and is an attractive place to pitch a
tent, waterski, take a break from driving or have a picnic.
