The wharf at Patonga Beach

Patonga
The most southerly beach on the Central Coast
Patonga is the most southerly beach on the Central Coast. It is located 90 km north of Sydney via the Newcastle Freeway and Woy Woy. The waters are calm due to its location within a recessed bay.

Families visit Patonga primarily to get away from it all. The beach is pleasant, relatively quiet and good for swimming. There is a wharf, a boat ramp and a childrens' play area. Brisk Bay faces in a south-easterly direction across to West Head, Pittwater and Barrenjoey.

The land here was issued as a grant to John Hatfield in 1839, then subdivided by a subsequent owner who died in the wreck of the Dunbar in 1857. 'Patonga' is said to be an indigenous word meaning oysters.

Patonga
The waters of Patonga Beach are calm due to its location within a recessed bay.

Families visit Patonga primarily to get away from it all. The beach is pleasant, relatively quiet and good for swimming. There is a wharf, a boat ramp and a childrens' play area. From the beach, follow Patonga Drive to the roundabout where you will find a war memorial in the middle of the circle. Turn left into Bay Rd which takes you to the southern tip of the Patonga peninsula where there is a caravan park. The beach ends at one of the area's ancient tidal inlets, Patonga Creek which snakes inland. There are large stands of mangroves around the estuarine mudflats.

Warrah Lookout
Head north-east along Patonga Drive. On its western side is Waratah Patch where there are some fine waratah displays from September to October. 2.5 km from Patonga Beach is a branch road to the right which will take you 1.2 km along a dirt road to Warrah Trig. The enjoyable Tony Doyle Walking Trail leads to a lookout directly out over Broken Bay 200 m below. There are some colourful wildflowers from July to October and Christmas bells. Just near the lookout the Doyle Track crosses over a dirt road. For the enthusiastic walker a left will take you to Pearl Beach and a right leads back to Patonga.
