Tuross Head (including Potato Point)
Quiet holiday resort away from the major centres on the
NSW South Coast.
Tuross Head was the family home and birthplace of Eva Mylott,
an Australian singer who had success in the United States in
the early years of the twentieth century. The Mylott family
owned the entire peninsula at one time. Eva's father,
Patrick, an importer of wines and spirits, established a
fleet of ships trading in and out of Tuross Head. He built
Tuross House in the 1870s but leased the property in 1883 so
that his daughter could have voice training in Sydney.
The 200 Norfolk pines in the town were planted by Hector
McWilliam after being told they would not grow in the area.
McWilliam, a one-time real estate salesman, acquired the
Mylott property in 1924, attempting, with little success, to
sell land in the area and make it a tourist spot. His name
is commemorated on a cairn in the reserve above the beach.
Boat fishers will find three ramps at Tuross Head where
there is quite a beautiful view out over the two lakes and
the coastline. The two lakes are noted for their whiting,
bream and flathead and, in season, prawns.

Potato Point
Popular surfing locations in the area include the beach at
Tuross Head and, further to the south, Potato Point. To get
to Potato Point it is necessary to return to the Princes
Highway, drive through Bodalla and turn east, and drive 9 km
east of the highway along Bodalla Road. 1.6 km further north
is Blackfellows Point.
Seaside Walks
If you wish to take a scenic walk make your way from the
caravan park at Blackfellows Point to the beach and head
north to the end of the long sand spit which forms the
southern headland of the Tuross Lake complex, a distance of
some 1.5 km. The return walk is along the river. For a
longer walk start from the boat ramp at the northern end of
Potato Point.
Further south again are Dalmeny and Kianga, popular with
board-riders, body-surfers and snorkellers. Fishing is also
popular at Lake Mummaga, Lake Brou and Lake Tarourga to the
south, Borang Lake to the north, and Bumbo Lake to the
north-west.
