Urana
Sleepy little service centre in the heart of the Riverina
Urana is a small service centre in the Riverina between Lockhart and Jerilderie. It is located 578 km southwest of Sydney via the Hume and Sturt Highways and, like many of the small towns in the Riverina, is a sleepy little settlement designed to meet the needs of the surrounding wool and wheat graziers.

Urana's brief moment of fame came on 20 August 1863 when the notorious bushranger, Dan 'Mad Dog' Morgan turned to highway robbery. The Wagga Police Magistrate at the time, Henry Baylis, was riding from Wagga to Urana where he was going to hold court. En route he was bailed up by Morgan and an accomplice. Baylis spurred his horse and headed for the bush. He thought he had escaped the bushrangers but they caught up with him, stole his purse (which contained a small amount of money) and Morgan asked for leniency if he was caught and came before the Magistrate. Baylis was less than amused. When he reached Urana he telegraphed the Wagga police and set in motion a manhunt which, while it managed to locate Morgan, failed to capture the bushranger.

 

Urana Court House Museum and Craft Shop

 

The current Court House in Urana, an impressive brick building with Roman-arched windows, is not the same as the court presided over by Henry Baylis. However it is true that Baylis continued as a Police Magistrate in the district until 1896 so he did preside over cases in the current Court House. This Court House was built in the 1890s - nearly 30 years after the escapades of Dan 'Mad Dog' Morgan.

The singer, Billy Field, famous for his album Bad Habits, was raised in Urana.

Things to see:  

Main Attractions
Today Urana's main attraction is the Urana Dam Aquatic and Recreation Centre which lies 5 km to the west of the township and is used for camping, fishing and water skiing.

To the south of the town is the tiny settlement of Oaklands which has an interesting Vintage Machinery Museum and to the north is Boree Creek, the home town of Federal National Party leader Tim Fischer
