Wakool
Small service town in the Riverina heartland
Wakool is located 797 km south-west of Sydney via the Hume,
Sturt, Newell and Riverina Highways and 63 km west of
Deniliquin by road.
Augustus Morris explored a river he named the Wakool in
1842 and runs in the area were established in his wake. A
survey took place in 1867 but closer settlement did not
really begin until the 1890s. It was the construction of a
railway line from Echuca to Balranald, with a station
established at Wakool, which put the town on the map as it
opened up the country for wheat farming.
The prospects of the area were further enhanced by the
building of Stevens Weir on the Edward River in the 1930s.
Rice-growing, now a local staple, commenced in 1942 with the
help of Italian prisoner-of-war labour. Soldier settlement
occurred at the end of the war. The area is now also
associated with wool production, as well as horse and cattle
studs.
Things to see:
In the area
The largest rice silo complex in the southern hemisphere is
located at Burraboi, 12 km north-west. A few kilometres to
the west are evaporation ponds covering several hectares.
They are part of a program to combat the salinity generated
by years of irrigation.
